It is said that we only use 10% of our brains, and it could be argued that we only use 10% of our digital cameras. Modern Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras, and even many going back a decade or more, offer an incredible range of capabilities for shooting in various modes, including fully manual, aperture or shutter priority, and more, plus a host of other features. If you would love to learn about the capabilities of your DSLR or smartphone, enjoy field trips with fellow photographers, compete in photo competitions, show and tell, and more, join the ShutterBugs Photography Club, with weekly meetings, making it one of the very active clubs here at On Top of the World.
A dedicated group of volunteers leads the diverse membership in taking stunning photos while having fun and fellowship. You do not need to have experience in photography; in fact, we would be delighted to share our knowledge with newcomers, from selecting the right camera gear to composing photos, using the best lighting conditions, and manipulating photos using computer-based tools.

If you don’t know an F-stop from a bus stop, don’t worry – the friendly and knowledgeable members of the ShutterBugs Photography Club are ready to help. What about smartphone photographs? The picture-taking capabilities of your average smartphone are quite advanced, and some give you excellent control over various settings. Still, there’s something about holding and using a modern DSLR and various lenses and accessories that’s quite satisfying. But smartphone photography is perfectly fine with ShutterBugs, and we’ll also explore some of those nuances.
So, if you ever wished you could take great photos of a harvest moon or capture close-ups of birds taking flight, we’ll show you how, and we guarantee you’ll have fun learning. Do you know what you need as far as lenses, filters, and tripods to make photo magic happen? We have you covered, and we’ll gladly help you figure it all out. It’s never too late to learn a new skill, and being a member of ShutterBugs is the perfect example. We meet or hold an event four times a month, so there are plenty of opportunities for getting involved.
Want to learn more? Come to one of our upcoming meetings on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. in the Hobby Building Event Room or visit otowspc.com. The first Tuesday of every month is generally a field trip, not a meeting.
See some of our members’ work on display in the Master the Possibilities lobby.
The ShutterBugs motto: “Those who don’t know should ask; those who do know should show and tell.”
