As the temperatures cool, the POP tennis courts are heating up with exciting gameplay. The game is growing in popularity, and no wonder! It is an active sport that newcomers can learn relatively quickly, while seasoned players enjoy play that challenges their technique and game strategy.

The sport’s history dates to the Victorian era. In 1887, a minister named Frank Beal in New York City created it as a variation on tennis that everyone could play, regardless of their physical fitness level or skill. Initially called “paddle tennis,” the game was played on a smaller court, making it easier for players to cover the court and maintain a rally.

Over the years, the sport continued to evolve, and in 1915, it was officially named POP tennis. The name change was primarily due to the unique sound when the ball strikes the solid paddle.

The amazing growth of the sport’s popularity in recent years can be traced to several factors: POP tennis teamed up with big names in sports and wellness to provide resources and gear for POP players; organizers worked together with the USTA to allow the game to be played on smaller, existing tennis courts; and best of all, it is a super social easy-to-learn and enjoyable activity that brings people together for a great time.

So, if you’re looking to stay fit, have fun, and make new friends, come join us! We are at the Arbor Activity Center lower courts (#7 through #10) Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 to 10 a.m. Several members also serve as trainers, ready to help newcomers learn the sport’s ins and outs. Stop by sometime and check us out!
