Unfortunately, higher vet costs\u00a0cause\u00a0strain on both owners and\u00a0animal rescues. Although pets with medical issues\u00a0can cost thousands of dollars per visit, even routine costs such as vaccines, blood tests,\u00a0and flea control can take a large chunk out of any family budget. Animal rescues are impacted\u00a0not only by absorbing higher\u00a0medical\u00a0expenses, but\u00a0also\u00a0by\u00a0increased\u00a0medical surrenders from those unable or unwilling to pay for\u00a0their pets. In most cases,\u00a0donations to\u00a0small, local rescues\u00a0rarely keep pace with the growing financial burden,\u00a0and Friends of SPCA is no exception.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These financial pressures also affect long-term sustainability. Overextended rescues risk burnout and closure, leaving fewer safety nets for vulnerable pets. In communities where shelters are already full, high veterinary costs create a ripple effect&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;more animals remain homeless, more are surrendered, and more face euthanasia.&nbsp;Although&nbsp;rescues continue to fight for every life they can,&nbsp;without affordable veterinary care, their mission becomes harder to sustain.&nbsp;Things&nbsp;you can do&nbsp;before adopting a pet&nbsp;to minimize financial exposure are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1.&nbsp;Make&nbsp;sure you&nbsp;can&nbsp;cover&nbsp;the annual routine vet&nbsp;cost&nbsp;of $500&nbsp;for&nbsp;15&nbsp;to&nbsp;20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2.&nbsp;Spay or neuter your pet to prevent future health issues (and unwanted litters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3.&nbsp;Research the various pet insurance options to cover&nbsp;serious conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/ontopoftheworldnews.com\/ocala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ZuzuAndFella.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Jill Yamamoto\nZuzu and Zella, fostered by Friends of SPCA members, were strays that a good Samaritan found.
