You’ve probably heard or read that dancing is good exercise. There’s a lot of information out there about it, online and in paper form. Connecting with others in an activity that you enjoy is a great way to work off that Thanksgiving feast and meet new friends or catch up with some old friends. Not only does it help us physically and mentally, but also socially.

In their article “How to Dance Your Way to Better Health, Happiness,” Abigail Seaberg, AARP, talks about five health benefits of dancing such as boosting brain function, helping to keep a healthy heart, improving bone health, improving core strength, and finally, helping with self-image. Maybe we can’t do that high kick anymore, but we can move in ways that make us feel proud of ourselves by doing a variety of different routines and benefiting from the process of learning them. What more could you want?

With the holidays weeks away, most everyone is hustling and bustling with cooking, shopping, and partying. Well, the Broadway and tap classes are doing that, plus working on new holiday routines and getting ready for more performances. The Broadway classes always look forward to our end-of-session recitals, where we strut our stuff to our latest routines. Since many of us are also in the tap classes, we might just toss in a tap routine or two. Our recitals are informal. We invite residents to come watch as we review our steps and prepare for our close-ups, Mr. DeMille. Oops, that was supposed to say videos and group pictures! On that note, we owe a big thanks to our own Mr. DeMille, also known as Steve Warren. Although he wears a t-shirt that says, “I’m a photographer, not a magician,” he can work a lot of magic when it comes to videoing us!

Speaking of performances, we would like to thank the Avalon Social Group for inviting us to perform at their neighborhood gathering on Monday, Nov. 11. We hope everyone had a good time. We did! Our next end-of-session/holiday recital will be on Friday, Dec. 13, in the Arbor Conference Center Dance Studios I-IV. Spectators are invited to arrive by 1 p.m. We hope you can attend. It’s free!

On Saturday, Dec. 14, we’ll entertain the residents of Brookdale and Bridgewater, including a visit from Santa himself. Our Halloween performance of “Ghostbusters,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and several other favorite tap and Broadway routines received a very warm welcome with cheers, an “Oh wow!” and even a fist bump! Always fun and heartwarming! We’ll kick off 2025 with a performance at the Health & Wellness Expo at Circle Square Cultural Center on Saturday, Jan. 11. Don’t miss this one!
