You’ve seen them driving through our neighborhoods, keeping a watchful eye on our surroundings, sharing a friendly smile and wave.  No sirens blaring, no dramatic scenes akin to “Law & Order.”  They are committed to their volunteer duties, identifying and recording anything that seems out of the ordinary.  As serene as it sounds, their work is an integral part of On Top of the World’s mission to maintain the highest possible level of safety for residents.  This is our Citizens Community Patrol.

The Community Patrol was founded in 2003 by a group of volunteers concerned about community safety. The group partnered with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and became a volunteer group under its direction.  The office provided a patrol car complete with identification markings, as well as training for 12 original members of the group.

Today’s new, independent organization consists of 42 members, with more volunteers stepping up to offer their time and dedication to the group.

The inaugural kickoff meeting was held on Monday, Aug. 24, unveiling the Colen Built Development repurposed patrol vehicle outfitted with safety equipment, with everyone sporting their new uniform polo shirts.  Allison Gysen, president of the Community Patrol, chaired the meeting, with the enthusiastic group hearing from speakers: Colen Built Development’s President Kenneth D. Colen; Vice President of People, Safety and Talent Matthew Waggoner; Director of Community Safety and Risk Management Jonathan Miller; and Geoff Oldberg, safety liaison.  Mr. Colen lauded the efforts of our Citizens Community Patrol and spoke of his commitment to residential safety here in On Top of the World.

With dawn-to-dusk, two-person patrols (volunteers can drive individually or with a partner), the teams visit all On Top of the World neighborhoods, including Circle Square Commons, Sholom Park, and construction areas, seven days a week.  When you see them, give your fellow residents a smile and a wave.  The Citizens Community Patrol.  They play a major role in keeping On Top of the World safe.
